Tax Information & 1099 Forms

VAE users who receive payments through the platform are responsible for understanding and complying with their applicable tax obligations.

Eligible users may receive Form 1099-K or other applicable tax documents through VAE's payment processor, Stripe.

VAE does not currently require a Social Security Number (SSN) as part of the standard VAE onboarding process.

If a user's payment activity reaches applicable tax-reporting requirements, or additional taxpayer information is otherwise required by Stripe or applicable law, VAE or Stripe will contact the user and request the necessary taxpayer information.

Users are responsible for providing accurate and current tax information when requested.

What Is a 1099-K?

Form 1099-K is an IRS information return used to report certain payments received for goods or services through payment cards and third-party payment networks.

For eligible VAE users, the form may report payments processed through VAE during the applicable calendar year.

Box 1a generally represents the gross amount of reportable payments processed for the user and may not reflect actual taxable income because the amount generally is not reduced by:

  • VAE or payment-processing fees;
  • refunds or credits;
  • discounts; or
  • other applicable adjustments.

Users should maintain their own records of income, expenses, fees, refunds, and other business activity when preparing their taxes.

Receiving or not receiving a Form 1099-K does not by itself determine whether income is taxable. Users remain responsible for reporting taxable income as required by applicable law.

Am I Eligible to Receive a 1099-K?

Under current federal requirements, third-party settlement organizations generally must issue Form 1099-K when reportable payments to a user exceed $20,000 and the user has more than 200 transactions during the calendar year.

Different or additional reporting requirements may apply under state law, and a Form 1099-K may be issued even when the federal threshold is not met.

VAE and Stripe will determine reporting eligibility based on applicable tax requirements.

Taxpayer Information

VAE does not collect an SSN solely as part of standard account onboarding.

When tax reporting or payment verification requires additional information, VAE or Stripe may request:

For Individuals

  • legal first and last name;
  • Social Security Number (SSN) or other applicable Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN); and
  • address.

For Businesses

  • legal business name;
  • business address; and
  • Employer Identification Number (EIN) or other applicable TIN.

Taxpayer information should match applicable government and tax records.

Failure to provide required taxpayer information may delay tax-document preparation or result in payment restrictions where required by Stripe or applicable law.

How Will I Receive My 1099-K?

Eligible users may receive access to their tax documents electronically through Stripe, including through Stripe Express where applicable.

Stripe may contact eligible users with instructions for:

  • verifying taxpayer information;
  • accessing Stripe Express;
  • selecting electronic delivery when available; and
  • viewing or downloading applicable tax forms.

Tax forms for the prior calendar year are generally made available by the applicable annual tax-reporting deadline. Stripe generally makes eligible 1099-K forms available by January 31.

Users should keep their email address and taxpayer information current to avoid unnecessary delays.

Important Dates

Exact dates may vary from year to year.

Users who may qualify for tax reporting should watch for communications from VAE or Stripe regarding taxpayer verification and tax-document availability.

Eligible tax forms are generally made available by January 31 following the applicable tax year, subject to applicable law and permitted deadline adjustments.

VAE may provide additional reminders as tax deadlines approach.

Payments & Transaction History

VAE maintains booking payment information within the Payments section of the platform.

Users can review information related to their earnings, including:

  • completed booking earnings;
  • submitted and approved invoices;
  • booking payment history;
  • applicable fees or adjustments; and
  • other available transaction details.

VAE intends to provide users with the ability to export their payment and transaction history as a PDF for recordkeeping and tax-preparation purposes.

Transaction history is provided for convenience and may not represent a user's taxable income. Users remain responsible for maintaining appropriate tax and business records.

For tax-reporting purposes, the year in which a payment is reported may depend on when the payment was processed rather than when the underlying booking occurred.

Do I Need VAE's EIN to File My Taxes?

Entertainers and Venue Owners who provide services through VAE are not provided VAE's Employer Identification Number simply for purposes of reporting their marketplace earnings.

Where applicable, tax documents issued through Stripe will contain the information required for that tax form.

Users should use their own taxpayer information and the information shown on their tax documents when preparing their returns.

Can VAE Help Me File My Taxes?

VAE does not provide tax, accounting, or legal advice.

VAE Support may assist with questions concerning VAE payment records, transaction history, or access to available tax documents, but cannot determine:

  • whether particular income is taxable;
  • which expenses are deductible;
  • how a user should complete a tax return;
  • a user's employment or independent-contractor tax classification;
  • or what tax position a user should take.

Users with tax questions should consult a qualified tax professional or the IRS.

Correcting a Tax Form

If information on a tax form appears incorrect, users should review their taxpayer information and follow the applicable VAE, Stripe, or IRS procedures for requesting a correction.

Users should contact VAE Support if the issue relates to VAE account or payment information.
